Hi friends,
Last weekend I raced for the first time in 8 months, and it hurt just as much as I remembered. It takes me quite a bit longer to recover these days due to a combination of getting older and a lot less endurance training — mostly the latter to be honest — so Sunday I was in a bit of a hole and didn’t want to get off the couch. But since then I’ve felt great all week except some lingering soreness where the inevitable cramps on the final descent took hold. Either way, I’m glad I did it, but I’m not quite sure I’ll line up for the next one in a month… we’ll see.
In other news, today is my and K’s 10-year anniversary, so that feels like something to celebrate! Wishing you a great day and weekend, and hope you find your own reason to celebrate no matter the occasion.

🎧 Podcast with some great stories and music recommendations — Tetragrammaton feat. Edward Norton
This was a great conversation between Edward Norton and Rick Rubin but it’s quite long at over 3 hours, so I’ve summarized a couple of the best recommendations I got from it, as well as a cool story about the premiere of Fight Club:
New(ish) Red Hot Chili Peppers song that sounds like one of their classics — White Braids & Pillow Chair, by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Cool album that combines jazz, classical and some ambient electronic vibes — Promises, by Floating Points feat. Pharaoh Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra
Finally, there’s a great story in the last 10 minutes of the podcast (start at 3:05:00) about the premiere of Fight Club at the Venice Film Festival in 1999. Edward talks about how he and Brad Pitt sat at the back of the premiere while it was being booed, and at the end hugged each other while teary eyed, saying that it was the best movie they thought would ever get to be in. It’s amazing how wrong the critics can be, and how proud they felt of what they created together despite everyone else telling them the opposite at the time. If you don’t listen to the whole podcast, then definitely check out these last 10 minutes.
😴 The evening routine that gives me the best chance of a good night’s sleep —
The only other thing I’d add is that I have a haptic alarm on my watch set at 8:30pm every night as a reminder to start my bedtime routine if I want to get to sleep by 10pm.
🏄♀️ Ava’s favorite book** — The Surfing Animals Alphabet, by Jonas Claesson
We love the artist Jonas Claesson, and his annual calendar has been a staple on our wall for the past few years. I first saw this book before Ava was born and couldn’t wait to read it to her, so it makes me happy that she loves it now too. Her favorites are the mandrill (who turns in a powerful way, using his rail to send buckets of spray) and the orangutan (who shows you a very good tip: a good bottom turn helps you get to the lip). Personally though, I live most vicariously through the zebra…
** This is a rapidly changing category, but this book has been at the top of the list for a couple weeks and I didn’t want to lose my chance to share it 😁
❝ Quote of the week — “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” ~Robert Brault
